The divorce of actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes captured the attention of residents of Louisiana and across the United States because of the divorce filing and the speed with which a court finalized the case.
At the time, no details about the divorce were made public, but the tabloid media has started to leak some stories of the couple.
One publication reports that by the time Holmes filed for divorce in June, their marriage had been over for six months, according to legal documents obtained by the tabloid.
The paperwork, dated Aug.17, gives a peek into the previously hush-hush divorce.
Under the agreement, Cruise, now 50, will pay Holmes $400,000 annually for the care of the couple’s 6-year-old daughter, Suri. The funds will go to pay for the girl’s dental and medical care, insurance, education, college fund and extra activities, such as camp. The payments will last until Suri’s 18th birthday. Should Cruise miss a payment, the agreement calls for a jail term of up to six months.
The documents do not show additional payments for spousal support.
Holmes, 33, signed a prenuptial agreement months before the couple married in a civil ceremony in the United States in 2006, days before their elaborate ceremony in Italy. The actress came to fame in the 1990s in the teen drama, “Dawson’s Creek.”
Cruise has been in the spotlight for more than 30 years when he made his movie debut in the 1981 film, “Taps.” His marriage to Holmes was his third, having been married prior to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman. He and Kidman have two children.
At the time of his marriage to Holmes, Cruise received good advice about signing a prenuptial agreement. Because there were no financial issues to iron out, except for child custody, the divorce was quick and efficient without any major fights.
